Getting Started

Before you actually connect to Alsherok, it is recommended (but not necessary) that you get a good MUD client such as SimpleMU or Mushclient (Windows), Kmuddy (Linux). These applications make mudding much easier as they have many useful features which you will find invaluable.

Now, upon entering the game for the first time, you will be prompted to enter your character's name. Since you don't have a character yet, just type 'new'. Then you should choose an appropriate and easily remembered name for the new character which you are going to play. Don't worry, it is always possible to start over if you suddenly want to change your mind about your character. There is no limit to how many characters you can own. You will then have to confirm your character's name, simply type Y or N depending on whether you think the name is spelled correctly.

After selecting your character's name, you will be prompted to select a password. Pick one that you can remember and keep this password to yourself. This is your special character and should not be shared with another person.

Next, you choose your sex from either male, female or neutral. This might have a bearing on certain things you can do in the game later in life. For a start, try selecting a sex that is the same as your own in real life.

Then you will have to specify whether you have color support. Usually you will select Ansi. You will then enter the game proper.

Typing 'help start' as advised will list out a few help files to read should you feel that you need to. Walk on until you come to a rope. Here you will have to wait until your name gets authorized. To help the process, try to pick a name which fits in with the theme of a fantasy setting. Vulgar or offensive names will not be accepted.

After that comes the selection of a race. Just type 'look painting' and follow the instructions stated there. This cannot be changed so choose wisely. Don't choose something that you don't feel up to role-playing or you might not enjoy the life of your character.

It is also recommended that you look in the classes page in the information part of this website. The same goes for the selection of your new character's class that follows. Just type 'look list' and follow the instructions on choosing your class. A class is best described as your profession in life.

The next step is your character's attributes or stats. The game will pre-roll the numbers and list them out for you when you type 'score'. You can decide to reroll those stats by typing 'say reroll'. All you need do is to keep looking at the combinations and then keep the one which you are most satisfied in. Remember, your character's race has a bearing on the actual numbers. When you are ready, then type 'say accept'.

Here are the definitions of what the stats mean:

Str = Strength Your strength determines how much weight you can carry and generally how well you do while fighting. Strength also affects your success when using certain skills. A high strength allows you to hit harder while a low strength means your attacks will do less damage.
Int = Intelligence Intelligence affects how much mana points you get when you gain a level, how well you learn a skill or a spell and your mana regeneration rate. Intelligence also affects your success when using certain skills and spells.
Wis = Wisdom Your wisdom level determines how many practice points you get whenever you gain a level, how well you learn skills and spells. Wisdom also affects your success when using certain skills and spells.
Dex = Dexterity Dexterity affects your movement point values, your success at hitting opponents when fighting and also determines any natural armor class bonuses which your character will receive. A high dexterity will increase your chances of quaffing potions and dodging during combat and how good your movement point regeneration rate is. Most thief skills depend on a high dexterity.
Con = Constitution Your constitution defines how many hit points you will get every time you gain a level and the rate at which you regain these hit points. It also affects the changes in your character's mental state whenever you go without food or water.
Cha = Charisma Charisma mainly affects the prices at which shopkeepers will sell you their wares. It also determines how effectively your charming spells work. The higher your charisma, the cheaper things will be sold to you.
Lck = Luck Luck affects a variety of things. From your character's good fortune in battles to the success when performing certain skills and spells.

Then you can define your color combinations when you adventure. Generally the interface is far more pleasing to the eye when there is color. Color can also be manually defined when you are in the game. Just type 'color' and 'help pcolors' to find out about our neat color setting feature.
